About this chapter
2 Kings 2 — Divided Kingdom Period
Unknown (possibly Jeremiah) — Court historians and prophets during the divided kingdom. Set in Jordan River valley, from Gilgal to Bethel to Jericho. Elijah's final day arrives, and though he tries repeatedly to leave Elisha behind, his devoted successor refuses to abandon him. As they journey together past groups of prophets who all know what's coming, the tension builds until they reach the Jordan River. After Elijah parts the waters with his cloak, a chariot of fire appears and sweeps him up in a whirlwind, leaving only his mantle behind for Elisha to inherit along with a double portion of his spirit.
