Zechariah

14 chapters · 211 verses · Zechariah · ~520–480 BC

Eight visions in one night — horsemen, lampstands, flying scrolls, and a high priest whose filthy clothes are replaced with clean ones. All pointing to a coming King who will ride into Jerusalem on a donkey.

Overview

Zechariah is the most messianic of the minor prophets. His visions and oracles predict specific details of Jesus's life: riding a donkey into Jerusalem, being sold for thirty silver coins, the shepherd struck and sheep scattered, and the one they "pierced" whom they will mourn for. The early visions encouraged the temple rebuilders; the later chapters set the stage for the Gospels.
