· Translation: KJV

Ezekiel 34:12As a shepherd seeks out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered abroad, so will I seek out my sheep; and I will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

The setting

Babylon, ~585 BC. God promises the impossible — to gather Jews scattered across the vast Babylonian empire, from Egypt to Persia. The exiles can hardly believe it, but within 50 years, it begins happening. Modern-day Iraq.

The emotion here: amazed at witnessing God's compassion override His justice

The original word

puwts (פּוּץ) — scattered like seed blown by wind, dispersed in every direction, seemingly impossible to gather again

Why it matters

This prophecy was fulfilled in stages: 538 BC (Zerubbabel), 458 BC (Ezra), and 444 BC (Nehemiah) as Jews returned from across the empire

Read with care

What most readers miss in Ezekiel 34:12

The phrase 'day of clouds and thick darkness' refers to the day of Jerusalem's destruction — God will undo that scattering on an equally dramatic scale

Common misconceptionPeople think this only happened once in history, but God is constantly gathering scattered people — through adoption, reconciliation, and bringing believers together across cultures.
