Deuteronomy 6:5 - Love the Lord With All Thine Heart
“Amarás, pois, o Senhor teu Deus de todo o teu coração, de toda a tua alma e de toda a tua força.”
Deuteronomy 6:5 is the climactic command of the Shema, Israel's central confession. The KJV reads: "And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." The Hebrew verb ahav ("love") is a covenantal term expressing loyal, active devotion, not mere sentiment. The threefold totality is comprehensive: levav ("heart") denotes the inner person - mind, will, and affection - not emotion alone; nephesh ("soul") refers to the whole living self, the life-breath and personhood; me'od ("might") literally means "very-ness, muchness," later rendered in rabbinic tradition as one's resources or wealth. The verse forms the second line of the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-5), recited daily by devout Jews from antiquity, and is the command Jesus identifies as the first and greatest (Matthew 22:37; Mark 12:30; Luke 10:27), expanding "might" to include "mind" (dianoia) to clarify the full scope already present in levav. Historically, Moses is preparing a generation born in the wilderness to enter Canaan, where they will face polytheistic Canaanite religion; the Shema defines covenant exclusivity and total allegiance to YHWH.
Chapter Context
Deuteronomy 6 follows the restatement of the Ten Commandments in chapter 5 and opens the exposition of the greatest commandment. Verses 1-3 frame the chapter as statutes Moses teaches so that Israel may fear the Lord, multiply, and prosper in the land. Verses 4-5 give the Shema proper: the confession of YHWH's oneness and the command of total love. Verses 6-9 then detail how this love is to be cultivated: the words are to be on the heart, taught diligently to children, talked of throughout daily life, bound as signs on hand and forehead, and written on doorposts and gates. Verses 10-25 warn against forgetting the Lord in prosperity, against testing Him as at Massah, and against neglecting to teach the next generation the meaning of His saving acts.
How to Apply This Verse
- Love God with integrated wholeness. Because the command covers heart, soul, and might, guard against compartmentalized faith that reserves religion for Sundays. Invite God into intellect, ambition, finances, relationships, and rest so that no domain remains autonomous.
- Cultivate love through the means in verses 6-9. Love of God does not grow in a vacuum. Place Scripture on your heart through memorization, talk of the Lord in household conversation, and mark your home and rhythms with reminders of His Word so that devotion is formed in daily practice.
- Teach the Shema to the next generation. Take responsibility for forming the children God has entrusted to you. Pray with them, explain Scripture in ordinary moments, and model wholehearted love so that covenant faith is transmitted, not merely assumed.
