Proverbs 3:6

Reconhece-o em todos os teus caminhos, e ele endireitará as tuas veredas.

Proverbs 3:6 continues the couplet from verse 5: "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." The verb "acknowledge" is the Hebrew "yada" (יָדַע), meaning to know intimately and experientially - the same verb used of covenantal and relational knowledge, including the knowing between spouses. It is far more than cognitive awareness; it is relational recognition. "Ways" is "derek" (דֶּרֶךְ), which can denote a road, journey, or habitual manner of life. "Direct" translates "yashar" (יָשַׁר), meaning to make straight, level, or smooth. The image is of a surveyor or trailblazer removing obstacles and leveling rough terrain so a traveler can advance without stumbling. "Paths" is "orach" (אֹרַח), a well-worn track. The promise is conditional: comprehensive acknowledgment of God produces comprehensive divine guidance. Cross-references include Psalm 32:8, God's promise to instruct and guide with His eye; Isaiah 30:21, "thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way"; Isaiah 45:2, "I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight"; and John 10:27, where Jesus' sheep hear His voice and follow Him. The verb "acknowledge" does not restrict itself to spiritual domains; Solomon says "in all thy ways."

Chapter Context

Proverbs 3:6 stands as the inseparable partner of Proverbs 3:5. Verses 5-6 form a complete couplet in Hebrew parallel structure: the first verse commands the inward posture of trust; the second commands the outward practice of acknowledgment and announces the resulting promise. The surrounding section (3:5-12) presents a series of wisdom pairings - trust and acknowledgment (vv. 5-6), fearing the LORD and turning from evil (vv. 7-8), honoring God with wealth (vv. 9-10), and enduring divine discipline (vv. 11-12). Each couplet carries a promise attached to an imperative. The chapter as a whole seeks to form not just behavior but orientation: a son who instinctively refers every step of life to his covenant God. Verse 6 answers the natural question after verse 5: what does trust look like in daily life?

How to Apply This Verse

  1. Practice conscious acknowledgment throughout the ordinary day. Before meetings, before conversations, before purchases, pause briefly to place the decision before the LORD. This habit trains the heart to treat no ward of life as secular or outside His lordship.
  2. Interpret delays and closed doors as part of divine direction, not its failure. To "direct" sometimes means to straighten by removing obstacles; it may also mean rerouting you around an obstacle you could not see. Submit your timetable to His.
  3. Join verse 6 to verse 5 in your memory. Never cite the promise of guided paths without the prerequisite of wholehearted trust and surrendered understanding. God's guidance follows the heart's full surrender, not partial cooperation.
