Biblically Accurate Angels

What do biblically accurate angels look like? Scripture describes cherubim, seraphim, ophanim, and living creatures — far from the popular winged-human image.

What Do Biblically Accurate Angels Look Like?

The Bible describes several distinct types of heavenly beings — and most do not match the popular image of a winged human. Scripture's own descriptions are far stranger. Below is what the text literally records.

1. Cherubim (כְּרוּבִים, kəruvim)

First appear in Genesis 3:24, guarding the way to the Tree of Life. Ezekiel describes them in detail:

"Every one had four faces, and every one had four wings. And their feet [were] straight feet; and the sole of their feet [was] like the sole of a calf's foot: and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass... their four faces [were] the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle." — Ezekiel 1:6–10

Gold cherubim also overshadowed the mercy seat on the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25:18–22), serving as the throne upon which God "dwelt between the cherubims" (1 Samuel 4:4).

2. Seraphim (שְׂרָפִים, səraphim)

Named only in Isaiah 6:2–3 — the prophet's vision of God's throne room. The Hebrew root saraph (H8313) means "to burn," so their name literally means "burning ones":

"Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, [is] the LORD of hosts: the whole earth [is] full of his glory."

3. Ophanim / Wheels (אוֹפַנִּים, ophanim)

In Ezekiel 1:15–21, alongside the four living creatures, the prophet sees wheels:

"Their appearance and their work [was] as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel... As for their rings, they were so high that they were dreadful; and their rings [were] full of eyes round about them four."

4. Four Living Creatures (Revelation 4:6–8)

John's vision on Patmos echoes Ezekiel and Isaiah:

"And the four beasts had each of them six wings about [him]; and [they were] full of eyes within."

5. "Angels" — Messengers

The ordinary Hebrew word malakh (מַלְאָךְ, H4397) and Greek angelos (ἄγγελος, G32) both mean simply "messenger." These beings often appear to humans in human form — Abraham entertains three "men" in Genesis 18; Hebrews 13:2 notes some "have entertained angels unawares."

Named messenger-angels in Scripture are few: Gabriel (Daniel 8:16; Luke 1:19, 26) and Michael (Daniel 10:13, 12:1; Jude 9; Revelation 12:7).
