The Day After Resurrection Sunday

Easter Monday is the Monday immediately following Easter Sunday — the day the Gospels record two disciples walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus and encountering the risen Jesus without recognizing him at first.

The Road to Emmaus

Luke 24:13–35 is the primary biblical text associated with Easter Monday. Luke writes:

Luke 24:13 — "And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem [about] threescore furlongs."

"That same day" is the day of the resurrection — so technically the Emmaus encounter happens on Sunday. However, because the dialogue and the breaking of bread at Emmaus extend into the evening (Luke 24:29 — "the day is far spent"), the narrative has historically been linked to the second day of Easter observance.

What the Text Records

• Two disciples walking — one named Cleopas (Luke 24:18), the other unnamed.
• Jesus joins them incognito — "their eyes were holden that they should not know him" (Luke 24:16).
• He expounds the Scriptures — "beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself" (Luke 24:27).
• They recognize him at the breaking of bread — "their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight" (Luke 24:31).

The Greek Words That Carry the Scene

Two Greek verbs give the passage its texture:

• diermēneuō (διερμηνεύω, Strong's G1329) — "to interpret thoroughly, to expound." This is what Jesus does with the Scriptures on the road (v. 27). It's the verb from which English "hermeneutics" derives.
• kaiō (καίω, G2545) — "to burn." The disciples say in verse 32: "Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way?" The same verb is used of lamps burning in Luke 12:35.

The Location of Emmaus

Luke gives the distance as "threescore furlongs" — 60 stadia, roughly 7 miles (11 km) from Jerusalem. Four ancient sites have been proposed as the biblical Emmaus: Nicopolis (modern Imwas, now destroyed), Qaryet el-'Inab (Abu Ghosh), al-Qubeiba, and Motza. None can be identified with certainty. The text itself treats the village as an ordinary stop on an ordinary road, which was part of the narrative point: the risen Christ appeared first in domestic, unremarkable settings, not in a temple court.

Easter Monday as a Public Holiday

Easter Monday is a public holiday in many countries — including Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, and across much of Europe and the Commonwealth. The observance dates to the medieval practice of treating the full week following Easter Sunday (the Octave of Easter) as festal. Over centuries most countries reduced this to a single additional Monday holiday. The United States does not observe it as a federal holiday.
