Bible Verses About Healing

Bible verses about healing — Hebrew rapha (H7495), Greek therapeuō and iaomai. Yahweh Rapha, Jesus's 37 recorded healings, James 5, Isaiah 53:5.

The Hebrew Vocabulary: Rapha

The primary Hebrew verb for "heal" is rapha (רָפָא, Strong's H7495) — "to mend, to repair, to make whole, to restore." It appears approximately 86 times in the Hebrew Bible. The verb's range is broader than modern English "heal":

  • Physical healing2 Kings 20:5 (Hezekiah), Numbers 12:13 (Miriam).
  • Healing of water or land2 Kings 2:21 (Elisha heals Jericho's waters), 2 Chronicles 7:14 ("heal their land").
  • National healingJeremiah 30:17, Hosea 6:1.
  • Healing of the heartPsalm 147:3: "He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds."
  • Repair of objects1 Kings 18:30 (Elijah "repairs" the altar — same verb).

The name Yahweh Rapha — "the LORD that healeth thee" — is introduced in Exodus 15:26, at the waters of Marah, where God makes bitter water sweet. It is one of the compound names of God in the Hebrew Bible.

The Greek Vocabulary: Therapeuō and Iaomai

The New Testament uses two main Greek verbs for healing:

  • Therapeuō (θεραπεύω, Strong's G2323) — to serve, care for, heal. The word from which English therapy and therapist descend. Used of Jesus's healings as ongoing care: "Jesus went about… teaching… and therapeuōn every sickness" (Matthew 4:23).
  • Iaomai (ἰάομαι, G2390) — to heal, cure, make whole. The word from which English iatrogenic and -iatry (psychiatry, podiatry) descend. Often used of specific healing events: "As soon as Jesus heard the word… he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid" (Mark 5:36, context of Jairus's daughter).

A related noun is sōzō (σώζω, G4982) — "to save, to heal, to preserve whole." The same Greek verb can mean "saved" or "healed" depending on context, and sometimes both at once: "Thy faith hath made thee whole (sesōken)" in Luke 8:48.

Jesus's Recorded Healings

The Gospels record approximately 37 individual healings by Jesus, plus many group-healing summaries. The methods vary:

  • Word alone — centurion's servant (Matthew 8:13); paralytic (Mark 2:11).
  • Touch — leper (Mark 1:41); Peter's mother-in-law (Matthew 8:15).
  • Clay and saliva — man born blind (John 9:6).
  • At a distance — nobleman's son (John 4:50).
  • Laying on of hands — various cases (Luke 4:40).

Only once is it explicitly recorded that Jesus could not perform many healings: at Nazareth, "because of their unbelief" (Matthew 13:58). The Gospel writers present healing as Jesus's consistent practice throughout his public ministry.

Healing in the Early Church

The New Testament records healing continuing in the apostolic church (Acts 3:6–8, Acts 9:33–35, Acts 14:8–10). The most detailed procedural instruction is in James:

James 5:14–15 — "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him."

When Healing Does Not Come

Scripture does not present physical healing as guaranteed to every prayer. Three passages are notable for their honesty on this:

  • Paul's "thorn in the flesh" (2 Corinthians 12:7–9) — Paul prayed three times for the removal of an affliction. God's answer: "My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness."
  • Trophimus (2 Timothy 4:20) — "Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick." Paul, a healer of others, leaves a coworker ill.
  • Timothy's stomach (1 Timothy 5:23) — Paul counsels Timothy to "use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities." The apostle's pastoral advice assumes chronic illness, not miraculous cure.

The biblical witness is that healing is real, common, and sometimes immediate — but not formulaic, not guaranteed by correct ritual, and not the primary measure of faith.

The Theological Frame

Isaiah 53 establishes the deepest frame in which biblical healing is interpreted:

Isaiah 53:5 — "But he [was] wounded for our transgressions, [he was] bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace [was] upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."

1 Peter 2:24 applies this verse directly to Christ's death. The connection between wholeness, atonement, and healing runs through both testaments. Physical healing in Scripture is part of the larger movement toward a fully restored creation — a pattern, not a promise with clauses.
