Jehovah Rapha
Jehovah Rapha — 'the LORD that healeth thee' from Exodus 15:26. Hebrew rapha (H7495, to mend). Declared at Marah after bitter waters became sweet.
The Name in Exodus 15:26
"Jehovah Rapha" (often written Yahweh Rapha or YHWH Rofe'ka) comes from a single verse at a pivotal moment in the Exodus narrative:
Exodus 15:26 — "If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I [am] the LORD that healeth thee."
The phrase "the LORD that healeth thee" translates the Hebrew YHWH rofeʼekha (יְהוָה רֹפְאֶךָ) — literally "YHWH, your healer." This is the first time in Scripture God introduces himself with the verbal title "Healer."
The Two Words
- YHWH (יהוה, Strong's H3068) — the covenant name of God, often rendered "LORD" in all capitals in the KJV and most English translations. The traditional English pronunciation "Jehovah" combines the consonants YHWH with the vowels of Adonai ("Lord"), following a medieval reading convention.
- Rapha (רָפָא, H7495) — the verb "to heal, to cure, to restore, to mend, to repair." The form in Exodus 15:26 is the participle rofe — "healer, one who heals." The exact form rofeʼekha means "your healer" (singular, addressed to the whole community).
The Context: The Waters of Marah
The declaration is made at Marah, three days after the crossing of the Red Sea:
Exodus 15:23–25 — "And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they [were] bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah. And the people murmured against Moses... And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, [which] when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet."
The healing named is therefore not primarily of persons but of the water. Hebrew rapha is broader than medical healing — it means "to make whole what was broken." The bitter water becomes sweet. On that occasion God introduces the name.
The name Marah itself (מָרָה, H4785) means "bitter." The passage turns on the contrast between bitter (mar) and healed (rapha).
The Word Rapha Across Scripture
The verb rapha appears approximately 86 times in the Hebrew Bible, with a range wider than physical healing:
- Physical healing — 2 Kings 20:5 (Hezekiah), Numbers 12:13 (Miriam)
- Healing of land or water — 2 Kings 2:21 (Elisha heals the waters of Jericho), 2 Chronicles 7:14 ("heal their land")
- Healing of a nation — Jeremiah 30:17, Hosea 6:1
- Spiritual/emotional healing — Psalm 147:3 ("He healeth the broken in heart")
- Repairing broken objects — 1 Kings 18:30 (Elijah "repaired" the altar, same verb)
The Conditional Structure of Exodus 15:26
The declaration "I am the LORD that healeth thee" is framed as the second half of a covenant conditional: if Israel listens to the voice of YHWH, keeps his commandments, and does what is right — then God will not bring on them the diseases of Egypt; for (the KJV's "for") God is their healer. The structure is covenantal, not unconditional. The context is immediately post-Exodus, as the people are being taught what covenant relationship with YHWH looks like.
The Name Among the "Compound Names" of God
Jehovah Rapha is one of several compound names built from YHWH plus a descriptive Hebrew word. Others found in the Hebrew Bible include:
- Jehovah Jireh — "the LORD will provide" (Genesis 22:14)
- Jehovah Nissi — "the LORD my banner" (Exodus 17:15)
- Jehovah Shalom — "the LORD is peace" (Judges 6:24)
- Jehovah Tsidkenu — "the LORD our righteousness" (Jeremiah 23:6)
- Jehovah Shammah — "the LORD is there" (Ezekiel 48:35)
Each appears at a specific narrative moment and names God by what he did or revealed in that moment. Jehovah Rapha belongs to this pattern — introduced at a specific place (Marah), after a specific act (sweetening of bitter water), as an identity disclosure.
