Kairos Meaning

Two Greek Words for "Time"

The New Testament uses two main Greek words for "time," and they are not interchangeable:

• Chronos (χρόνος, Strong's G5550) — measured, sequential time. Clock time. Hours, days, years. The word from which English "chronology" and "chronic" derive.
• Kairos (καιρός, G2540) — the right moment, the opportune time, the appointed season. Qualitative rather than quantitative. The right kind of time rather than the next tick of the clock.

In classical Greek, kairos originally referred to the critical moment in archery — the narrow opening when a shot could succeed — and in weaving, the split second when a shuttle could pass through the loom. The word carries that sense into the New Testament: the decisive moment, the ripened instant.

"The Time Is Fulfilled"

Mark 1:15 — "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel."

The Greek is peplērōtai ho kairos — "the kairos has been filled up, has come to full measure." This is the first public announcement in Mark's Gospel, and Jesus uses kairos, not chronos. The claim is not that a specific calendar date has arrived; it is that the qualitatively right moment has come. All the preceding history of Israel has ripened into this season.

"The Fulness of the Time"

Galatians 4:4 — "But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law."

Here Paul uses chronos, not kairos — to plērōma tou chronou, "the fullness of chronological time." Both words appear across the New Testament for theologically weighted moments; Paul's choice of chronos emphasizes that at a specific point in measured history, God acted. The concepts overlap but each word carries its own center of gravity.

"In Due Time"

Romans 5:6 — "For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly."

The Greek kata kairon — "according to the kairos" — means "at the right moment, at the appointed time." Paul is emphasizing that the crucifixion was not random or reactive but occurred at the ripened moment.

"Redeeming the Time"

Ephesians 5:16 — "Redeeming the time, because the days are evil."

The Greek exagorazomenoi ton kairon uses the marketplace verb exagorazō ("to buy out of the market, to purchase completely") with kairon. Paul is telling the Ephesian church to buy up the opportunities — to seize kairoi as they appear. Not to manage chronology more efficiently, but to act in the opportune moments.

Other Key Kairos Passages

• Ecclesiastes 3:1 (LXX) — "To every [thing there is] a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven." The LXX uses kairos for both "season" and "time." The Hebrew original is et (עֵת, H6256), which has similar qualitative range.
• Matthew 26:18 — "My time is at hand" (ho kairos mou engus). Jesus's statement as the Passover approaches.
• Luke 21:24 — "the times of the Gentiles" (kairoi ethnōn) — an appointed period, not a measured duration.
• Revelation 1:3 — "for the time is at hand" (ho gar kairos engus).
• Acts 17:26 — God "hath determined the times (kairous) before appointed."

The Rhetorical Tradition

In ancient Greek rhetoric and philosophy, kairos was one of the most discussed concepts. Plato, Aristotle, and the later rhetoricians treated it as the skill of recognizing the right moment to speak, to act, to decide. The New Testament inherits this vocabulary and applies it to the decisive moments of God's action in history. When a biblical author writes kairos, the reader is being told: pay attention — this moment is ripened.
