Soul Ties
Soul ties — the phrase is not in the Bible. What Scripture actually says: 1 Samuel 18:1 (Hebrew qashar), Genesis 2:24 (one flesh), and 1 Corinthians 6:16.
"Soul Tie" Is Not a Biblical Phrase
The phrase "soul tie" does not appear in the King James Bible — or in any standard English Bible translation. It is a modern English coinage, most common in late-20th-century American evangelical and charismatic teaching, used to describe an invisible spiritual bond formed between two people (often through sexual intimacy, close friendship, or covenant).
The underlying idea — that deep bonds between persons exist and matter spiritually — does find support in Scripture. What the Bible does not offer is the specific term "soul tie" or the mechanics often attached to it in contemporary teaching.
The Passage Most Often Cited: 1 Samuel 18:1
1 Samuel 18:1 — "And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul."
The Hebrew verb translated "was knit" is qashar (קָשַׁר, Strong's H7194) — "to bind, tie, league together." The verb is used elsewhere of:
- Binding a memorial on the hand (Deuteronomy 6:8)
- Tying a scarlet thread (Joshua 2:18, Rahab)
- A political conspiracy — "conspired against" (2 Kings 9:14)
The word "soul" here is nephesh (נֶפֶשׁ, H5315) — "breath, life, self, inner being." The verse describes the soul (inner self) of Jonathan tied to the soul of David. This is the clearest Hebrew-language basis for the "soul tie" concept, and the bond described is between two non-sexual friends.
Genesis 2:24 and "One Flesh"
Biblical teaching on the spiritual dimension of marriage rests on Genesis 2:24:
"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh."
The Hebrew verb dabaq (דָּבַק, H1692) — "to cling, cleave, stick to" — is physical in its root meaning. Paul quotes this verse in 1 Corinthians 6:16 and extends the principle:
1 Corinthians 6:16 — "What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh."
Paul's argument is that sexual union creates a real union — the same word (Greek kollaō, G2853, "to glue, to join fast") is used of Christians united to the Lord in verse 17. This passage is the strongest New Testament basis for the claim that sexual intimacy creates a spiritual bond.
What Scripture Does Not Say
Scripture does not provide a technical category called "soul tie," does not outline ritual procedures for "breaking" them, and does not define a set of symptoms caused by them. These elaborations belong to specific 20th-century ministry traditions — not to the biblical text itself. Readers encountering "soul tie" teaching should know which elements trace to Scripture (1 Samuel 18:1, Genesis 2:24, 1 Corinthians 6:16) and which elements are contemporary application.
Biblical Language for Deep Human Bonds
- Covenant — berith (H1285). Jonathan and David cut a covenant (1 Samuel 18:3).
- One flesh — basar echad (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:5).
- Knit together — qashar (1 Samuel 18:1), and in the NT Greek sumbibazō (Colossians 2:2, "knit together in love").
- Cleave — dabaq (Genesis 2:24, Deuteronomy 10:20 — "cleave unto" the LORD).
