What Does the Bible Say About Marriage? 30+ Bible Verses

Marriage appears in the second chapter of the Bible and the last — framing the whole biblical story. In Genesis 2 God creates the woman from the man's side and declares they are "one flesh." In Revelation 21 the story closes with the wedding supper of the Lamb — Christ and his bride, the church. Between these poles Scripture teaches that marriage is covenant (not contract), mutual (husbands are called to Christ-like sacrificial love for their wives; wives to respect their husbands as the church respects Christ — Ephesians 5), exclusive (one man and one woman, for life — Matthew 19:4-6), and intentionally imaging something larger than itself: the union of Christ and the church. The Bible does not idealize marriage — it honestly records Abraham's, Jacob's, David's, and Solomon's troubles alongside the song of Song of Solomon and the fidelity of Boaz and Ruth. What it teaches is not that marriage is easy but that it is a sacred covenant worth learning to keep well. Below are the verses that shape Christian marriage theology, chronologically arranged.
