· Translation: KJV

Jeremiah 36:6therefore you go, and read in the scroll, which you have written from my mouth, the words of Yahweh in the ears of the people in Yahweh's house on the fast day; and also you shall read them in the ears of all Judah who come out of their cities.

The setting

Jerusalem, ~605 BC. Jeremiah hands a handwritten scroll to his faithful scribe Baruch, instructing him to go to the temple during a public fast day and read God's warnings aloud to the assembled crowd in modern-day Jerusalem, Israel.

The emotion here: strategically hopeful despite being blocked

The original word

qārā' (קָרָא) — to call out, proclaim publicly; the same word used for a herald announcing royal decrees

Why it matters

Baruch was likely from a wealthy, literate family — most people couldn't read or write

Read with care

What most readers miss in Jeremiah 36:6

This is the first recorded instance of 'publishing' God's word — making copies to reach people the prophet couldn't reach directly

Common misconceptionPeople think this shows Jeremiah was lazy or afraid, but he was actually being brilliantly strategic — Baruch could access people Jeremiah was banned from reaching.
