Jesus Crown of Thorns

Jesus's crown of thorns — Greek stephanos ex akanthōn. Gospel accounts in Matthew 27, Mark 15, John 19, and the Genesis 3 thorn connection.

The Crown of Thorns in the Gospels

Three of the four Gospels record that Roman soldiers placed a crown of thorns on Jesus's head during his scourging before crucifixion. The accounts are brief but consistent:

  • Matthew 27:29 — "when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put [it] upon his head, and a reed in his right hand"
  • Mark 15:17 — "platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his [head]"
  • John 19:2 — "the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put [it] on his head"

The Greek word is stephanos ex akanthōn (στέφανος ἐξ ἀκανθῶν, Strong's G4735 + G173) — literally "wreath of thorns." The word stephanos referred to a victory or royal wreath, making the soldiers' gesture a mockery of Jesus's claim to kingship.

What Kind of Thorns?

The Gospels do not specify the plant. Botanical scholars and Holy Land historians have proposed several candidates based on what grew around Jerusalem:

  • Ziziphus spina-christi ("Christ's thorn jujube") — a small tree with paired thorns, common near Jerusalem
  • Paliurus spina-christi (Jerusalem thorn) — flexible branches, easily braided
  • Sarcopoterium spinosum (thorny burnet) — a low shrub used for firewood in the region

Roman Context

Mock-crowning was not a standard Roman execution practice — the event in John 19 is recorded as an improvised act by the soldiers in response to the charge that Jesus claimed to be "King of the Jews." The Roman historian Philo and others describe similar public humiliations of claimants to thrones in the early Empire.

Old Testament Connection

In Genesis 3:17–18, thorns appear as part of the curse on the ground after the Fall: "cursed [is] the ground for thy sake... Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee." Early Christian writers from Irenaeus onward noted the connection between the curse of thorns in Genesis and the crown of thorns at the crucifixion, though the Gospel texts themselves do not make this explicit.
