Nicodemus in the Bible

Nicodemus is mentioned only in the Gospel of John — three separate times, across the span of Jesus's ministry. He is identified as a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews (John 3:1), indicating membership in the Sanhedrin, the 71-member Jewish governing council in Jerusalem.

The Name

Nicodemus (Νικόδημος, Nikodēmos) is Greek — literally "victory of the people" (nikē "victory" + dēmos "people"). Among first-century Jewish elites, the use of a Greek name was common, especially among those educated in Hellenistic cities.

The Three Appearances

1. The Night Visit (John 3:1–21)

Nicodemus comes to Jesus "by night" — a detail the Gospel notes three times. In the Greek of John's Gospel, "night" often carries symbolic weight (compare John 13:30, where Judas departs "and it was night"). Jesus responds to his questions with the famous declaration: "Ye must be born again" (John 3:3, 7), using the Greek gennēthē anōthen (γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν), which means both "born again" and "born from above."

This conversation is the setting for John 3:16 — perhaps the single most-quoted verse in the Bible.

2. Defending Jesus Before the Sanhedrin (John 7:50–52)

When the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest Jesus and the officers returned empty-handed ("Never man spake like this man"), Nicodemus spoke up within the Sanhedrin: "Doth our law judge [any] man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?" (John 7:51). This was not a full defense of Jesus but an appeal to procedural fairness — yet the other members scoffed at him.

3. The Burial (John 19:39–42)

After the crucifixion, Nicodemus joined Joseph of Arimathea (another secret disciple on the Sanhedrin) in burying Jesus. He brought "a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound [weight]" — a staggering quantity, equivalent to about 75 pounds by modern measure, a weight typical of royal burials. Both Nicodemus and Joseph would have rendered themselves ceremonially unclean for the Passover by handling a corpse — a public act of solidarity at considerable personal cost.

Historical Background

The Babylonian Talmud mentions a "Nakdimon ben Gurion" — a wealthy Jerusalem aristocrat of the same period whose name (Nakdimon = Aramaic for Nicodemus) has led some historians to propose this as the same person. The Nakdimon of the Talmud is described as enormously wealthy, which would fit the massive quantity of burial spices in John 19.
