Proverbs 3:15
Proverbs 3:15 meaning — 'more precious than rubies' refers to personified Wisdom (Hebrew chokmah). Context in the 3:13-18 poem and the Hebrew word peninim.
The Verse in the KJV
Proverbs 3:15 — "She [is] more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her."
Who Is "She"?
The "she" of Proverbs 3:15 is Wisdom — personified as a woman throughout the early chapters of Proverbs. Hebrew chokmah (חָכְמָה, Strong's H2451) is grammatically feminine, and the Proverbs writer extends the grammar into a full literary character. This woman Wisdom is introduced in Proverbs 1:20 ("Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets"), developed through chapters 1–9, and climaxes with the 22-verse acrostic poem of Proverbs 31:10–31.
The verse is not about a human woman or a bride. It is about the value of wisdom itself.
"More Precious Than Rubies"
The Hebrew word translated "rubies" is peninim (פְּנִינִים, H6443). The precise identification is uncertain. Ancient translators variously rendered it:
- Septuagint (LXX) — lithōn polytelōn (λίθων πολυτελῶν), "costly stones."
- Vulgate — cunctis opibus, "all riches."
- Modern scholars variously: coral, pearls, or red corals, with "pearls" favored in many contemporary translations (NIV, ESV).
The KJV translators chose "rubies," following a late-medieval jeweler's sense of the word. Whatever the exact stone, peninim denoted the most expensive gem known to the Hebrew reader — so the verse reads: "Wisdom is worth more than the single costliest thing you can name."
The Argument of the Passage
Proverbs 3:13–18 is a short poem (six verses) celebrating wisdom. Verse 15 sits at the center of an ascending comparison:
- v. 13 — wisdom brings happiness
- v. 14 — her profit exceeds silver and gold
- v. 15 — her value exceeds rubies; nothing compares
- v. 16 — in her right hand: long life; in her left: wealth and honor
- v. 17 — her ways are pleasant; her paths peace
- v. 18 — she is a tree of life to those who take hold of her
The poem's logic is that no market-quantifiable good (silver, gold, rubies) can establish an exchange rate for wisdom. The comparison is explicitly commercial — it is not saying wisdom is beautiful, but that wisdom is unaffordable in the ordinary economy of desirable things.
The Echo in Proverbs 31:10
The same phrase — "her price is far above rubies" (rachoq mi-peninim) — returns in the acrostic poem of Proverbs 31:10, now describing the eshet-chayil, the "woman of valor." The poetic strategy is deliberate: the wisdom personified in chapters 1–9 is embodied in chapter 31 as a flesh-and-blood household. The same Hebrew comparison opens and closes the book.
A Note on Application
Because of Proverbs 31:10's use of the identical phrase for a wife, some modern readers apply Proverbs 3:15 to women generally. The grammatical subject of 3:15 is unambiguously chokmah (wisdom). The verse in its original context is about the supreme value of wisdom itself.
