"Trust in the Lord with All Your Heart" — Proverbs 3:5

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." — Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

The Hebrew Original

The verse in Hebrew reads:

בְּטַח אֶל־יְהוָה בְּכָל־לִבֶּךָ

B'tach el-YHWH b'khol-libbekha

• B'tach (בְּטַח) — imperative of batach (בָּטַח, Strong's H982). The root means "to lean on, feel confident in, be secure in." It is the same word used in Psalm 4:5 ("put your trust in the LORD") and Psalm 37:3. The Hebrew concept is physical — leaning one's weight on something that will hold.
• El-YHWH (אֶל־יְהוָה) — "toward YHWH" (the covenant name of God).
• B'khol-libbekha (בְּכָל־לִבֶּךָ) — "with all your heart" (lev, Strong's H3820). In biblical Hebrew, lev is not primarily the seat of emotions (as in modern English "heart"). It is the seat of will, thought, and decision — closer to the English word "mind" or "inner self."

The Context

Proverbs 3 is a collection of fatherly counsel to "my son" (repeated 7 times in the first 21 verses). The book of Proverbs is traditionally attributed to Solomon (Proverbs 1:1), king of Israel in the 10th century BC. The chapter's opening theme is the reliability of God's wisdom over against one's own calculations — setting up verse 5 as the core instruction.

"Lean Not Unto Thine Own Understanding"

The second half of verse 5 contrasts batach (trust/lean on) with shaʻan (שָׁעַן, H8172) — also meaning "to lean" but used specifically of leaning on one's own resources. The verse uses two "leaning" verbs to draw a contrast: lean toward God (secure), do not lean on yourself (insecure).

The word translated "understanding" (binah, בִּינָה, H998) is not knowledge in general — it's the analytical capacity to distinguish between options, to reason through a decision. The verse does not tell the reader to abandon reasoning; it tells the reader not to lean on it as a foundation.

"He Shall Direct Thy Paths"

The verb in verse 6 is yashar (יָשַׁר, H3474) — "to make straight, smooth, level." The path metaphor runs through the Hebrew wisdom literature. Compare Psalm 25:4 — "Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths" — and Proverbs 4:11 — "I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths."
