· Translation: KJV

Nehemiah 9:22Moreover you gave them kingdoms and peoples, which you allotted according to their portions. So they possessed the land of Sihon, even the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

The setting

Jerusalem, Israel, ~445 BC. The returned exiles are reciting conquest history while standing in their own rebuilt city. They conquered these lands 900 years ago, lost them to Babylon, and now they're back — seeing God's pattern of giving what seems impossible.

The emotion here: humbled by inherited victories they didn't earn while facing current enemies

The original word

nāḥal (נָחַל) — to inherit, possess as an inheritance — not conquered by strength but received as a gift

Why it matters

King Og of Bashan was described as the last of the Rephaim (giants) — his bed was 13 feet long and 6 feet wide

Read with care

What most readers miss in Nehemiah 9:22

This isn't celebrating military victory — it's celebrating God giving them portions, like dividing an inheritance among children

Common misconceptionPeople see this as glorifying war, but the emphasis is on God 'allotting portions' — He divided the land like a father giving inheritance to children, not rewarding military prowess.
