Judges 19 — Period of the Judges
Unknown, possibly Samuel — Compiler of Israel's history during the chaotic period of the judges. Set in Bethlehem, hill country, and Gibeah of Benjamin. A Levite's concubine leaves him and returns to her father's house. When he goes to bring her back, her father keeps delaying their departure with elaborate hospitality. Finally traveling home, they stop for the night in Gibeah, where the men of the city demand to sexually assault the Levite. In a horrifying act of cowardice, he throws his concubine outside to save himself. She is abused all night and dies on the doorstep.
