About this chapter

Psalms 114Kingdom and Exile Period

AnonymousTemple worship leader recounting Israel's history. Set in Jerusalem Temple during festival worship. In vivid, almost mythical language, the psalmist retells the Exodus as if nature itself recoiled before God's power. The sea flees like a frightened animal, mountains skip like rams, and the earth trembles — all because the God of Jacob is transforming rock into pools of water and leading His people to freedom.

Psalms 114:8114:8

Read when: Read this when you need to remember that the same God who split seas and moved mountains is working in your impossible situation.

1When Israel went forth out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign language; 2Judah became his sanctuary, Israel his dominion. 3The sea saw it, and fled. The Jordan was driven back. 4The mountains skipped like rams, the little hills like lambs. 5What was it, you sea, that you fled? You Jordan, that you turned back? 6You mountains, that you skipped like rams; you little hills, like lambs? 7Tremble, you earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, 8who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of waters.
