1I cry with my voice to Yahweh. With my voice, I ask Yahweh for mercy. 2I pour out my complaint before him. I tell him my troubles. 3When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, you knew my path. In the way in which I walk, they have hidden a snare for me. 4Look on my right, and see; for there is no one who is concerned for me. Refuge has fled from me. No one cares for my soul. 5I cried to you, Yahweh. I said, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living." 6Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need. deliver me from my persecutors, For they are stronger than me. 7Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name. The righteous will surround me, for you will be good to me. A Psalm by David.

About this chapter
Psalms 142 — United Kingdom of Israel
David — King of Israel, warrior-poet, man after God's own heart. Set in A cave, likely while fleeing from Saul. Hiding in a dark cave, David pours out his heart to God in complete desperation. Everyone has abandoned him—there's no one to turn to, no human help in sight, nowhere to run. His enemies are too strong, and he feels utterly alone and overwhelmed. But even in this cave, his darkest hour, he clings to one truth: God is still his refuge, his portion in the land of the living.
“Psalm 142:5”— 142:5
Read when: Read this when you feel completely alone and abandoned, with nowhere else to turn but to God.
