Psalms 126
About this chapter
Psalms 126 — Post-Exilic Period
Anonymous — Unknown psalmist celebrating the return from Babylonian exile. Set in Jerusalem after the return from exile. The exiles have returned home, and it feels like waking up from a dream too good to be true. Laughter fills the streets, songs break out spontaneously, and even foreign nations are amazed at what God has done. But some are still in captivity, so they pray for complete restoration—knowing that those who plant seeds through tears will harvest with shouts of joy.
“Psalms 126:5” — 126:5
The overwhelming joy of a dream finally coming true mixed with longing for complete fulfillment.
Read when: Read this when you're going through a difficult season but need hope that joy is coming.
1When Yahweh brought back those who returned to Zion, we were like those who dream. 2Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing. Then they said among the nations, "Yahweh has done great things for them." 3Yahweh has done great things for us, and we are glad. 4Restore our fortunes again, Yahweh, like the streams in the Negev. 5Those who sow in tears will reap in joy. 6He who goes out weeping, carrying seed for sowing, will certainly come again with joy, carrying his sheaves. A Song of Ascents. By Solomon.
